Проводит также исследования в области общей биологии, геологии, геофизики, метеорологии и экологии. Совместно с Массачусетским технологическим институтом [ Massachusetts Institute of Technology] осуществляет учебные программы. Институту принадлежат несколько исследовательских судов и глубоководная подводная лодка "Элвин" [Alvin], которая использовалась при изучении места катастрофы "Титаника".
